Photographer Studies - David Hockney

Updated: Oct 11, 2021

David Hockney should not be limited to just being a photographer. Hockney, born in 1937, has had a career in art for decades - famous for his paintings, drawings, printmaking, photography and set design. Hockney got his skill at the RCA (Royal College of Art) in London, we he apparently felt 'Right at home', he did well but had to challenge the college through his time. Hockney was made to undergo written assignments and certain projects which he didn't believe in, knowing that if he was judged by his writing skills he would be unjustly undermarked. He managed to bypass these assessments and graduated, possibly even changing how the school operated after his departure, with them giving the option for some to drop this work.

Hockney, on the right

Hockney moved from England to Los Angeles, where he has done most of his work. Throughout the world he has held exhibitions featuring his and other fellow artists work, starting when he was 26 in 1970 at Whitechapel.

He set a record, becoming the most visited exhibition in the history of Tate Modern. Now every exhibition he starts is guaranteed to garner thousands of eager followers willing to pay hundreds to see his work.

What we are focusing on right now is his impressive photo joiners. Another project of his, Hockney practically created the process, refining it to a point where he is considered the greatest at the process despite his barely using it through his career. When searching for photo joiners or panographs he is the first result seen for these reasons.

Hockney has focused on both rural photography and portraiture, mainly on small groups of people. His work of the American wilderness is the most impressive to me; centering on the pine forests, mountains and streams found across the country. His composure always takes advantage of panographs taking multiple pictures at different points in time, to show the difference it can make with people, areas and nature. Its this work I will be taking inspiration from when beginning my project on the process.

The portrait pictures he made are also highly impressive, joining pictures from unique angles and highlighting emotions which differ when looking at a particular subject.
